If the Dutch ex-football international Quincy Promes wants to become a Russian citizen, Spartak Moscow will help him. That says Oleg Malyshev, the new director of the Russian football club, against Russian media.

“The decision on a Russian passport is up to Promes, but if he wants it, we will help him,” said Malyshev. Promes was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison by the court in Amsterdam on Monday for the abuse of his cousin in 2020. The former Dutch international is appealing against this.

The assault came to light because Promes’ phone was tapped in a drug trafficking investigation. The attacker, who now plays for Spartak Moscow, was not present for the verdict of his sentence. He wants to stay out of harm’s way from the Dutch authorities as long as possible and remains in Russia. The fifty-time international is also accused of drug trafficking in the Netherlands, but that case is still pending. He is accused of having invested in more than 1,300 kilograms of cocaine. For this offence, if found guilty, the attacker may expect a far greater penalty than the one now facing him.

Quincy Promes has been playing for Spartak Moscow since 2021 and a departure from Russia is not imminent. Because of the political situation, Russia does not extradite anyone to Western countries. The attacker is therefore currently safe in the Russian capital and thus avoids punishment.
