Derby time in Bruges: On Sunday Cercle and Club look each other in the eye, although Igor Thiago drew all the attention on Wednesday. His transfer has hijacked the Bruges week a bit. His coach Ronny Deila spoke extensively about the man worth 37 million on Friday. “When an offer like this comes along, you have to act.”

It came like a bolt from the blue: Igor Thiago to Brentford FC, for no less than 37 million euros. The derby week immediately turned out to be hijacked. How Ronny Deila experienced that transfer? From the sidelines, as it turns out.

“That’s why he’s so loved.”

“We haven’t talked about it much,” the Norwegian said during his press chat. “When such an offer comes in, you just have to act. In football there is a certain hierarchy. Everyone benefits from this. We can be proud of such a transfer, and Thiago can be proud of his work and his development. Let’s not forget that he will be here until the end of the season.”

Could that compromise his focus? Or will the Premier League dream only fuel the beast? “I see it as something positive,” Deila nods. “Thiago is extremely grateful to Club and for what everyone has done for him. He has the right norms and values and will now suddenly not float. Ultimately, he just likes being here. So I expect him to just keep scoring goals.”

And of course Deila understands that after just one season he is already making the transition to the biggest competition in the world. “He has several reasons for this,” it sounds. “There is the financial security for his family. And the Premier League is a dream for every footballer. At the same time, he is a good example for the rest of the dressing room, because a number of boys have as much talent as Thiago. He has always continued to work hard, continue to laugh and has the right energy. Even when things got difficult. That is why he is so loved. But he would never have succeeded without a team around him.”

Zinckernagel en Vetlesen terug?

And that will be no different against Cercle on Sunday. Thiago returns from suspension and Club will be able to use him well. “If we win that match, we are almost certain of the Champions’ Play-offs,” says Deila. “At the same time, it is also a derby: it is even more special than other matches. We definitely want to win.” The coach may recover Zinckernagel and Vetlesen, although we will have to wait for Sunday’s selection. “They are doing very well. But if not for this weekend, then probably for the match against Anderlecht,” said Deila.

Whether it will be high on Sunday remains to be seen. After the first leg (0-0), Vanaken talked about the playing style of green-black. “Nothing to do with football,” he said at the time. However, according to Deila, only one thing counts: victory. “And then you play how you want. They know us, we know. Cercle uses a very specific style and they have quality. But we go into every match with a great chance of winning.”
