With the start of the tournament just around the corner, the Australian Open sees even more tastemakers drop out. The Spanish Paula Badosa (WTA 11) and home player Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA 35) also have to pass with an injury for the first grand slam tournament of the year.

The Australian Open previously had to cancel some big names for the upcoming edition, after Carlos Alcaraz and Venus Williams were injured and Naomi Osaka announced her pregnancy. Now Badosa, who suffered a hip muscle injury during the tournament in Adelaide this week, and Tomljanovic, who was unable to recover in time from a knee problem, are added.

Badosa said on social media that she was “sad” after her forfeit and that she is doing everything possible to return as soon as possible. Tomljanovic for her part had a hard time hiding her disappointment at a press moment on Saturday. “This is probably the worst timing ever,” the Australian stammered in tears.
