Lepoint escapes at Seraing after this attack with yellow, Standard reacts furiously: “They wanted to kill him”

Consternation in the final phase of the Liège derby. An attack by Christophe Lepoint on Standard youngster Cihan Canak’s ankle was only punished with a yellow card by referee Bram Van Driessche. VAR Jasper Vergoote also apparently didn’t mind and let the phase pass. “They wanted to kill Canak,” teammate Noah Ohio said after the game

Ronny Deila and his Seraing colleague Jean-Sebastien Legros also agreed on the phase after the game. “Always red”, Deila thought. “I haven’t seen the stage back yet, but I know enough after what I’ve seen on the pitch. Not only was a promising attack stopped, but the way in which it was done was much too heavy-handed. Cihan is very lucky that he didn’t get injured there. I’m sure it wasn’t meant to hurt him, but a red card would have been justified.”

An opinion to which Legros remarkably enough agreed. “The referee could indeed have given a red card. Just as he could have given us a penalty for a foul by Zinckernagel on Mbow. I myself also have to guess why those two phases have not been analyzed by the VAR.”

Curious what the Referee Department has to say about it on Monday…
