Naomi Osaka (25) is expecting her first child. The Japanese top tennis star announced this on social media on Wednesday evening. It also explains her cancellation for the Australian Open, which starts next Monday.

Last Sunday, the organizers of the Australian Open already announced that Osaka would not participate in the grand slam tournament. No reason was given for the forfeit at that time. There was speculation that she would have had enough of top tennis, but that is not the case.
“I can’t wait to get back on the tennis court, but here’s a little update for 2023,” Osaka wrote with the ultrasound of her future child. “The past few years have been very interesting. That’s the least you can say. But I think that the most intense moments in life can also be the most fun. I realize life is short and I don’t always take enough time to enjoy it. Every day is a new adventure. There is so much more in the future that I can look forward to. One of those new things is that my child will be able to come and watch my games.”

Osaka (WTA 42) is a four-time Grand Slam winner and former number 1 in the world. She won the Australian Open twice before (2019 and 2021). The Japanese has not played a game since she withdrew from the Tokyo tournament in September with abdominal muscle problems.
