The Barcelona court is investigating an alleged sexual assault by Brazilian defender Dani Alves. The former FC Barcelona player is said to have touched a woman under her underwear in a nightclub without being asked. The 39-year-old Alves, who was still active with Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar last month, denies the allegations.

A spokesman for the Supreme Court of Catalonia in Barcelona confirmed to Reuters news agency that an investigation has been opened against the right-back of Mexico’s UNAM Pumas following a complaint by the woman. The assault took place in December.

Alves, who played football for FC Barcelona for nine seasons, but also played for Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and São Paulo, told the Spanish television channel Antena 3 last week that he had not touched the woman. “I was dancing and having a good time without bothering anyone,” he said. “I don’t know who this lady is. How could I do that to a woman?”
