KV Kortrijk flourishes under Storck. The German coach has not lost a single match and makes KVK dream of more. Other guys, including Nayel Mehssatou (20), get their chance again. “It feels good to be able to play again.”

OH Leuven (twice) and Genk were beaten by the ‘new’ KV Kortrijk. Bernd Storck (59) put together a team that always goes through fire for each other. They were a bit lucky on Sunday evening, but you won’t hear anyone complaining about that at the Chamber of Commerce. “There is a clear difference from what we have shown in previous months,” says a delighted Mehssatou. “We fight for each other, we have become stronger and we play better as a team. Things are going well under the new coach. After every match we win, we celebrate in the locker room, which is different from when I arrived here. Then we often lost and the atmosphere was not so good. Hopefully that period is now behind us.”
Again basic player
Under Custovic, Mehssatou disappeared from the base to the bench. Now he was at the kick-off for the third time in a row. “It feels good to be able to play so much again. For me personally it has been a long time since I made so many minutes. Due to an illness I suddenly ended up in a three-man defense and that was new to me. The coach put me in that position because I have a good left foot. I feel good next to Silva and Watanabe. I have to defend more than on the flank, but that’s part of it.”

KV Kortrijk leapfrogs in the standings with KV Oostende. The Guys are climbing out of the relegation zone and seem to be reviving under Storck. “It is important that we are now in a place out of the danger zone,” says Mehssatou. “Seraing managed to win, Zulte Waregem did its job and then you know that we also have to take points. OH Leuven was not an easy customer, but for us only the result counts. We are glad that we are no longer under that line.”
Interest from Chile
In June, Mehssatou made his debut with the Chilean national team. In the South American country, they closely monitor his performance and that is accompanied by interest. “It is true that there is interest from Colo Colo from Chile. I am charmed by their interest, because it is the largest club in the country. I have received many messages from enthusiastic supporters, but at the moment I feel good at KV Kortrijk and a transfer is not an option. My mother would like me to draw there. She is from Chile. Never say never in football, of course, but I should first delve into their league a bit more.”
