“After careful consideration, I announce that I am retiring from club and international football with immediate effect,” Bale, 33, wrote.
“My decision to quit has been by far the toughest decision of my career,” an emotional Welshman continues on his social media. “I feel incredibly honored to have been able to fulfill my dream as a footballer because it is the sport I love. It definitely gave me one of the best moments of my life.” “Highlights across 17 seasons will be hard to match no matter what chapter comes my way next.”
Gareth Bale also had a special word for Wales. “I may stop as a footballer, but the national team will always be present in me. Being lucky enough to be Welsh and represent the country (as captain) has given me something I’ve never experienced in my life. I am honoured.”
The winger, captain of Wales (also recently at the last World Cup in Qatar), played for Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Los Angeles FC in his career.
