Nicholas, brother of brand new Red Devil Olivier Deman, is himself an amateur footballer and top fashion model in the making: “I’m really proud of Oli, but I’m looking for my own way”

Deman is the man these days. This not only applies to brand new Red Devil Olivier (23, Cercle Brugge), but also to his younger brother Nicholas (22 next week). As a goalkeeper he graced a transfer from FC Knokke to SV Oostkamp, as a fashion model he is causing a stir at various top brands.

Father and mother Deman sometimes have to pinch themselves these days with a son who made his debut in Estonia on Tuesday evening with the Red Devils and is active at the European Championships for U21 from today and his younger brother who shaves high tops as an up-and-coming fashion model. Enough has already been said and written about the fact that Olivier has shot up like a comet at Cercle Brugge and now even has an A-interland to his name. But let’s talk about Nicholas Deman for a second. After three seasons with the first team of first national FC Knokke as the third goalkeeper without playing minutes, he was able to force a transfer to second national SV Oostkamp.

“I will cherish my time at FC Knokke forever, but SV Oostkamp now seems like the perfect club to continue my career”

“Except for one year at Cercle, I played at Knokke from the age of five. I will cherish that period forever,” says Nicholas. “Those three years in the first team were extremely instructive. I learned a lot from goalkeeping coach Ivan Gabriël, but of course also from my competitors such as Sven Dhoest and Leandro Depaepe last season. In the shadow of someone like Dhoest (ex-Club Brugge, red) sitting is not a shame, but gradually I got the feeling that it was time for something else. The turning point was probably that cup match against Beerschot at the end of September last year. I sat on the bench and Sven was not fit, but I stayed. I then turned the knob and realized I didn’t want to be a third man anymore. When Oostkamp called, I was immediately enthusiastic and won the opportunity. I already know that it will click with trainer Kurt Delaere, because I completely agree with his approach. Oostkamp seems to me to be the perfect club to continue my career.”

It will be difficult to follow in the footsteps of his brother Olivier, because the eldest of the three brothers Deman is now at a lonely height. “Of course it’s fantastic It was experiencing now. Three years ago he was still in the B-squad at Cercle, now he is actually a Red Devil. No one would have dared to dream this, but it is well deserved. It was has always been a hard worker and has always believed in his possibilities. He is now being rewarded for that. I’m really proud of him. I deeply sympathize with my parents and younger brother Cedric. Of course there was still contact, but we didn’t really talk about it yet. It has been busy for all of us.”

Armani, Lagerfeld, Hogan

Where are the days when they could still help father in the shop? It won’t be before this summer, because Nicholas is also running out of time these days. He has been living in Italy for some time, after being invited by a modeling agency to show up. “I’ve been doing this for two years now, but it has to be combinable with my studies and football. I actually fell into it by accident and came into contact with agencies in Belgium, Italy and also Germany. My Italian agency recently asked to come down and they managed to fit in. It is intense, because we naturally try to meet as many customers as possible.”

The brands are already names to say to you. Nicholas Deman cites Armani, Lagerfeld and a few smaller Italian brands. “As a fashion model, you have to be yourself first and foremost, otherwise you will fall through the cracks. But it’s running fine now. I normally stay here until the end of this month, because there’s another assignment for Hogan coming up. Preparations will start at SV Oostkamp in mid-July. Becoming a full-time model is not an option for the time being, but I will see what is still possible in that area in the future. I am looking for my own way in life and in football.”
