United States win first edition of successful United Cup

The United States won the first edition of the United Cup on Sunday, a tennis tournament for mixed teams in Australia with a prize pool of 15 million dollars (14 million euros).

In the final in Sydney, the Americans defeated Italy. They won the first three singles matches to take an unbridgeable lead.

Jessica Pegula (WTA 3) beat Martina Trevisan (WTA 27) 6-4 and 6-2. Subsequently, Frances Tiafoe (ATP 19) saw his opponent give up injured after a 6-2 set win against Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 23). Taylor Fritz (ATP 9) made the decision by winning 7-6 (7/4) and 7-6 (8/6) against Matteo Berrettini (ATP 16).

Eighteen countries took part in the group stage, in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. Each confrontation consisted of two singles matches for both men and women and one mixed doubles. Belgium did not get through the group stage after defeats against Bulgaria (2-3) and Greece (1-4).
