After Friday’s two singles matches, in which Jessica Pegula (WTA 3) trumped the Polish number 1 in the world Iga Swiatek and Frances Tiafoe (ATP 19) had no trouble with Kacper Zuk (ATP 245), the US was ahead 2-0 . Team USA continued that line on Saturday. Taylor Fritz (ATP 9) defeated Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 10) in two hard-fought sets (twice 7-6 (7/5)) and Madison Keys (WTA 11) put Magda Linette (WTA 48) over the knee (6-4 and 6-2). In mixed doubles, Pegula and Fritz completed American dominance against Alicja Rosolska and Lukasz Kubot (6-7 (5/7), 6-4 and 10/6).
Italy had a double lead after Friday’s duels after victories by Martina Trevisan (WTA 27), against the Greek spearhead Maria Sakkari (WTA 6), and Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 23), against Stefanos Sakellaridis (ATP 803). With a victory in three sets (4-6, 7-6 (7/2) and 6-4) against Matteo Berrettini (ATP 16), the Greek top player Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 4) brought back the tension. Lucia Bronzetti (WTA 54), however, secured the Italian final victory against Valentini Grammatikopoulou (WTA 199) in 6-2 and 6-3. In the superfluous mixed doubles, Camilla Rosatello and Andrea Vavassori recorded the 4-1 final score for Italy with a win against Grammatikopoulou and Petros Tsitsipas (6-3, 4-6 and 10/5).
