Ajax reports to pay 8 million euros for Rulli. That amount can increase to a maximum of 10 million euros through bonuses. Rulli still had a one and a half year contract with Villarreal.

Rulli must become the new first goalkeeper of Ajax, where trainer Alfred Schreuder also has Remko Pasveer, Maarten Stekelenburg and Jay Gorter at his disposal. Rulli was Argentina’s second goalkeeper at the World Cup, behind Emiliano Martínez, who played a starring role in the final and quarter-final penalty shoot-outs against France and the Dutch national team respectively.

Rulli made his debut in his own country with Estudiantes in 2013 and then played in Europe for Real Sociedad and Montpellier. The goalkeeper excelled for Villarreal in 2021 during the Europa League final against Manchester United. He converted a penalty in a long penalty shootout and then stopped David de Gea’s bet.

Ajax resumes the competition on Sunday with an away match against NEC.
