Everything Mateu Lahoz has been doing in recent weeks is under a magnifying glass. The Spaniard has been the most talked about referee in the world since his appearance at the World Cup during the quarter-final between the Netherlands and Argentina. Last week there was a very hectic Barcelona derby and he also had something remarkable in store on Wednesday.

During the Copa del Rey match between Linares Deportivo and Sevilla, the referee was done with Sevilla coach Jorge Sampaoli after more than fifteen minutes. Lahoz interrupted the game to go to the side and give Sampaoli a yellow card. This one didn’t stop talking and immediately got red.

Assistant coach Jorge Desio doubts whether Sampaoli has really shouted harsh words towards Lahoz. “I don’t think it was anything serious. It was a shout from Jorge. I stood close to it and I heard nothing out of the ordinary. At the end of the match I saw them talking to each other in a friendly way.”
Despite the lack of Sampaoli along the line, Sevilla eventually won easily 5-0. Moroccan World Cup hero Youssef En-Nesyri made three.
