Neymar will not play with Paris Saint-Germain on Friday in the 1/32nd finals of the Coupe de France against Châteauroux from the Championnat National, the third tier in France. The Brazilian is getting extra rest to strengthen his ankle, after he injured himself during the World Cup in Qatar. Kylian Mbappé and the recently returned world champion Lionel Messi will also not play at PSG.

“Neymar’s absence had been foreseen for some time,” said coach Christophe Galtier on Thursday. “Our World Cup visitors are closely monitored by our medical staff. We made the decision that ‘Ney’ can continue to heal his severe sprain during this period.”

The Brazilian suffered a sprained right ankle in the first match of the World Cup against Serbia, before making his comeback in the round of 16 with a goal against South Korea. De Seleção were then eliminated in the quarterfinals by Croatia.

Messi, who only appeared on the call at PSG on Wednesday, and Mbappé are also missing from the cup match and will be rested. “We wanted ‘Leo’ to recover at home with his family. Obviously he will not play tomorrow,” said Galtier. “I will pay close attention to what he tells me, but we want him to be available for the next game.”
