It won’t be before the start of the competition, but KVV Zelzate coach Dave Van Waes is already looking forward to the new stadium: “That will give us an extra boost in terms of sport”

ZELZATE

KVV Zelzate resumed training sessions in this preparation period for the second time on Wednesday.

The Channel Team already completed three training sessions and one exhibition match in June. The team of chairman Stefaan Luca appointed Dave Van Waes as the new head coach. He succeeds Gino Pauwels, who will act as T2. The new T1 has been an assistant coach under Alan Haydock at VK Ninove for the past three years.

“I mainly experienced an emotional last season at VK Ninove”, Dave Van Waes looks back. “There was not only the death of chairman Patrick De Doncker, with whom I had a close relationship. We couldn’t avoid relegation from the first national either. Despite that sporting sacrifice, I don’t look back on that campaign with a bad feeling. We competed with modest resources in a high-quality series. We competed against professional teams such as Patro, Club Liège and Francs Borains, who will look impressive in the Challenger Pro League next season. It was no surprise that my contract was not renewed. The relationship with some of the strongholds was wearing out. Moreover, the board wanted to take a new direction with some new faces.”

Modest resources

KVV Zelzate had a particularly difficult return round last season and had to fight against relegation almost to the end. Many offensive qualities left with Richard Antwi Manu, Roy Broeckaert and Sami Djadi. Moreover, Thomas Zwart is still recovering from a serious knee injury. “I think we have sufficiently absorbed the departure of those guys,” says Van Waes.

“Don’t forget that we work with modest resources, which means we have to be inventive. Donovan Habbas has scored 17 and 15 goals at SV Oudenaarde and Olsa Brakel in recent years. Louis Thyssen (KFC Sporting Sint-Gillis-Waas) has a lot of technical ability. Mohammed Dassy (ex-FC Ganshoren) is a youth product of RWDM, where he has learned a lot. He must give us added value. This also applies to Wolf Acks, who comes over from the promises of Cercle Brugge.”

“There was the unfortunate departure of Roy Broeckaert, among others, to whom I could not promise many playing minutes. KVV Zelzate has also been honest with Jens Vandenhende and Sami Djadi, who were able to look for a new challenge relatively early.”

“Thomas Zwart is ahead of his rehabilitation schedule. I hope he can celebrate his return in November, but we will understandably not take any risks with him.”

Looking forward to new stadium

KVV Zelzate is currently training at the accommodation of SV Zaffelare and will go on an internship in Eindhoven from 21 to 23 July. The friendly match at Eendracht Elene-Grotenberge is scheduled for Wednesday 26 July. On Sunday, August 13, the first official match in the Belgian Cup is on the calendar. “On an extra-sports level, we are looking forward to the new stadium. We will not be able to initiate this at the start of the competition, but this should not disturb the fun. It will be a beautiful complex, which should give us an extra boost.”
