You don’t see this often! Turkish coach protects referee against his own players

Striking moment in the match between Antalyaspor and Fenerbahçe. When the home team saw the equalizer disallowed, the home players tried to vent their anger on the ref. But that was counted without their own coach Nuri Sahin.

Sahin (34) is a Turkish-German former player of Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord, Liverpool and Real Madrid. After Michy Batshuayi gave the visitors the lead in the second half, the home side started an offensive. That seemed to be successful, but ref Kadir Saglam disapproved of the equalizer.

That led to frustrations. The Antalyaspor players went to get a story from the ref, but he received the support of their own coach. Sahin ran onto the field, put himself in front of the referee and chased his players away. In the tumult, Sahin’s assistant Alfons Groenendijk did get a red card.

Sahin has been at the helm of Antalyaspor since October of 2021. First as a player-trainer, but since last summer he is only a coach. Sahin did not want to say too many words after the game. “Whatever happens, we really won’t get these points back. Anyone who has seen this match must judge for themselves.”
