Gold joined West Ham as a youth player and, after a successful career in business, became club president in 2010. He was a successful tandem with Sullivan, who confirmed the news in a comment on the club’s website. “Of all our joint ventures, West Ham gave us the most pride and happiness,” he said. “David had a longstanding relationship with the Hammers, grew up in the area and always wanted the best for the club. His passing is a great loss for all of us.”

Gold was also chairman of Birmingham before buying into West Ham in 2009. The club thanked him “for protecting the future of the club during a period of great financial uncertainty”.
