The national coach of the American football team during the last World Cup, Gregg Berhalter, has made a striking confession on social media. The 49-year-old football coach kicked his current wife – at the time his girlfriend – in the legs in 1991, he writes. “This story is ours, but hopefully others can also learn from this.”

After Berhalter first briefly looks back at the last World Cup, in which the United States was eliminated by the Orange squad in the eighth finals, the coach switches to the incident. “During the World Cup, a person reported to US Soccer (the American Football Association, ed.) with information about me and my family that could bring me down, with the aim of ending my relationship with the association.” Berhalter’s contract expired at the end of 2022 and both parties are still examining whether to continue the employment. More clarity will be provided about this during the upcoming international match period of Team USA.

Quarrel in 1991

Berhalter continues: “This is a difficult step, but my wife Rosalind and I want to clearly state the truth ourselves. This story is ours, but hopefully there are lessons in it that can be of value to others.”

Then the former player of Sparta, among others, throws out the high word. “In 1991, Rosalind and I were dating for four months, when we went for a drink in a pub. An argument ensued, which continued outside. There it became physical and I kicked her in the legs.”

No excuses

Berhalter continues: “There are no excuses for my behavior that night. I am ashamed of it to this day. Rosalind wanted nothing to do with me at the time, but I wanted to take responsibility for what I did and told my friends and family. I also voluntarily sought help to improve myself, one of my best decisions ever. My behavior from then has never been repeated since.

Berhalter seems to have created a Twitter account specifically for the statement. The American Football Association has now also responded to the statement: “US Soccer immediately ordered an external investigation after hearing the statement. We appreciate the honesty of Gregg and his wife and will announce the results once the investigation is complete.”
