“The goal is to try to get a historic result and qualify for a European Championship for the first time,” FNSBiH president Vico Zeljkovic told a press conference. “We have confidence in the national coach and believe that he will find a good plan to succeed in that mission.”

Hadzibegic, 65, succeeds Bulgarian Ivaylo Petev, whose two-year contract expired on December 31. Hadzibegic, former Yugoslav international (1982-1992) and captain of the national team, was national coach of Montenegro from July 2019 to January 2021. During his career, the Sarajevo-born and former defender of Betis Sevilla and Sochaux has coached teams in France, Spain and Turkey. He also briefly coached Bosnia in 1999.

Bosnia will compete in the European Championship qualifying round against Portugal, Iceland, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Liechtenstein.
