It seems a matter of time before the next top transfer thanks to the World Cup is a fact. Enzo Fernández (21), the Argentinian midfielder of Benfica, has already failed to show up for training twice in order to force his transfer to Chelsea. According to foreign media, the Premier League club has more than 120 million euros left for the best youngster at the past World Cup.

It’s all going very fast for Fernández. He has already impressed in the Champions League this season, including against PSG and Juventus, and made his debut for the Argentina national team in September. He started the World Cup as a substitute, but after his great goal in the second game against Mexico, he came into the team and did not leave. Less than three months after his international debut, there was already a World Cup and a prize for best youngster at the World Cup in his trophy cabinet.

And as so often happens after a strong World Cup, a top transfer is also on the way. The well-known Italian transfer specialist Nicolò Schira reports that the transfer from Fernández to Chelsea, which would trump Liverpool, among others, is coming for 127 million euros. The Argentinian would sign a contract until 2028 and earn ten million euros a year. And River Plate, the Argentinian top club for which Fernández played until last summer, would receive another quarter of the transfer fee. Fabrizio Romano, the other transfer specialist, knows that the transfer is in its final phase, but that Benfica’s technical director still has to approve the deal.

Missed two ‘working days’

Also an excellent thing for Benfica, although the Portuguese will be left with mixed feelings. They only acquired the Argentinian last summer for barely 14 million euros and are now collecting a multiple. But they only enjoyed their new diamond for a few months – from mid-July to mid-November. And the way it is also wringing: Fernández did not show up for training twice in the past week. According to the Portuguese Record the club had still demanded that he come back and he did on Tuesday. The midfielder remains convinced that he wants to leave.

The departure of the strong holder is of course also a boost for Club Brugge, which will receive Benfica next month (February 15) in the 1/8th finals of the Champions League. The second leg in Lisbon is not until March 7.
