VIDEO: Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka overwhelmed by emotions, swears at umpire and smashes racket following death of ex-boyfriend

The emotions became too much for Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian, the second seed in Miami, lost her second match 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 against the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina (WTA 36).

For Sabalenka it was the second match since the tragic death of her ex-boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov a few days ago. After the defeat, an angry and emotional Sabalenka threw her racket hard against the court.

Then she walked away without shaking Kalinina's hand. Not illogical since the latter is a Ukrainian and Sabalenka has not been touched by such players since the start of the war. Earlier in the game, Sabalenka had received a warning for hitting the ball, to which she responded in Russian with: “Go f*ck yourself!”

Earlier, Sabalenka had defeated her best friend Paula Badosa (WTA 80) in straight sets. “She is a very strong woman, a great personality,” the Spaniard said afterwards. “You see it on the court. I also know her off the field and I'm not surprised. I knew she would play well. I wished her the best and we'll see where she goes in this tournament.”

Former top ice hockey player Koltsov died earlier this week at the age of 42. The 25-year-old Sabalenka called his death “an unthinkable tragedy” but decided to take office in Miami anyway.
