FIFA is going to ask every country to name a stadium after Pele. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said this on Monday in Brazil, where he is present for the wake and funeral of the late football legend.

In April 2021, there were plans to have the famous Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro bear Pelé’s name, but that ultimately did not happen after a veto from the political world.

Pelé, 82, passed away on December 29 after a battle with cancer. On Monday, a 24-hour vigil will be organized in honor of the triple world champion at the Vila Belmiro stadium of Santos FC, the club for which the former attacker played almost his entire career. Pelé will be buried in an intimate circle on Tuesday.
