German World Cup hero and former teammate of Jean-Marie Pfaff Andreas Brehme (63) died after cardiac arrest

Andreas Brehme has died of cardiac arrest at the age of 63, his former team Bayern Munich announced. The German is best known for his goal in the 1990 World Cup final, with which he gave Germany the world title.

“FC Bayern is deeply shocked by the sudden death of Andreas Brehme. The German record champion is united in mourning with his family and friends. We will always keep Andreas in our hearts – as a world champion but above all as a very special person. He will always be part of the FC Bayern family. Rest in peace, dear Andi!”, reads the message from Bayern Munich on X.

Brehme only played for the German top team for two seasons (from the summer of 1986 to the summer of 1988). There he played seventy matches alongside Jean-Marie Pfaff, including the final of the European Cup I in 1987. Bayern lost that final 2-1 to Porto. The greatest moment of Brehme’s career was undoubtedly his winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final against Argentina.
