Tedesco also remains cool after a 5-0 win with the Red Devils: “Germany? No, thank you. I am very satisfied here and want to stay with you”

Domenico Tedesco is cool. Play well, play poorly, win or lose: the national coach is always the same at the press conference. Also when he was asked about the comparison between the match against Estonia and Saturday’s match in Azerbaijan.

“The difference today was that we were sharp from the start,” said Tedesco. “In everything. Passing, dribbling, duels. And we scored very quickly. That was the biggest difference. That kind of makes it easier. We created a lot of chances. That also helped to achieve such a score.”

The national coach didn’t think everything was right either. “Not everything was bad in Azerbaijan, just like tonight not everything was good. We can still be more patient. We still came into the ball too much to have the ball. Some players had to stay in position more. We have to finish the chances. We could have scored more. We won’t always have so many opportunities. But hey, it’s always a challenge to meet expectations. That’s like in a cup against a small team. Then people always expect the strongest team to win. That is not always the case, especially in Germany where there are always cup surprises.”

Speaking of Germany. After the dismissal of Hansi Flick, they are looking for another national coach. “No, thank you. I am very satisfied here and want to stay with you.”

Especially now that qualifying is almost complete. Yes, right? “No, we are not qualified yet, football is a strange game. I want to win in Austria to secure the European Championship there. To do this, the players have to stay healthy. We are going to Austria in October. We want to be qualified as quickly as possible.”

Tedesco also addressed questions about individual players. “First of all, I am happy for Jan Vertonghen. He deserves a night like this. A 150th international match must be celebrated. He was also captain.”

The national coach also explained the choice of Mangala over Tielemans. “It was a decision for Mangala, not against Tielemans. Doku played very well. Every time he has the ball he is dangerous. He was very good. Trossard too: he already played well in Azerbaijan but now he scored, that was the only difference. Carrasco also has an important role, he is an important player for us. So far it has not been planned that I would go to Saudi Arabia to see him.”

Häberli saw Estonia “suffer for ninety minutes against Belgium”

Estonia was a bird to the cat in the King Baudouin Stadium. “We are facing a 5-0 defeat here and it could have been more. We suffered for ninety minutes,” admitted Estonian national coach Thomas Häberli afterwards.

“We saw an opponent with a lot of speed and quality on the ball. We cannot handle that level of quality. We did everything we could, including more defensive tactics, but the difference was simply too big. Belgium is in the top five in the world and has shown that.”
