Farewell to an icon: Marco Verratti says goodbye to Paris Saint-Germain after eleven years as the most decorated player in club history

On Friday evening, before the league match between Paris Saint-Germain and OGC Nice, the Parisians said goodbye to club legend Marco Verratti. The Italian midfielder closes the gates of the Parc des Princes stadium after eleven years and moves to the Qatari Al-Arabi.

In 2011, PSG suddenly fell into Qatari hands. The club from the French capital immediately attracted superstars such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Edinson Cavani. A slightly less well-known incoming transfer at the time was nineteen-year-old Verratti, who came over from Italian second division Pescara for twelve million.

Verratti would grow into an absolute club legend with the necessary serenity. During his stay in Paris, the small but powerful Italian won no fewer than thirty prizes. The international was crowned national champion nine times with PSG and won numerous other cups. The only thing missing was a European prize. The Champions League rather. The Parisians also failed to win the cup with the big ears with the deadly attacking trio Mbappé-Messi-Neymar. With his thirty trophies, Verratti will go down in the history books. He is the most decorated player in PSG and Ligue 1 history.

A worthy farewell

There is no doubt: a club icon like Verratti deserves a dignified farewell. From the city, from the club and from the supporters who supported him for eleven years. Draped in a PSG scarf, the Italian warrior waved a giant flag as the Parisians’ loyal supporters sang to him. It even made Verratti emotional.

The midfielder continues his career in Qatar. PSG even received a large transfer fee for the now thirty-year-old midfielder. Al-Arabi, Verratti’s new employer, paid around 45 million euros.
