The Netherlands takes controversial video with the famous haka offline, “out of respect” for host countries of the Women’s World Cup

The KNVB has taken a video that has been on the social media accounts of the Dutch women’s football team offline “out of respect”. The images showed how players on a training field did an exercise that is compared online with the famous haka. In principle, this ritual dance of the New Zealand Maori can be performed by anyone, as long as there is respect and understanding for the meaning behind it.

The KNVB says in a response that there was no question of a haka, but that it concerns images of a physical part of a training that was aimed “at evoking inner strength from the core of the body”.

“There has therefore never been an intention from the team to treat the cultural values of one of the host countries of the World Cup disrespectfully,” emphasizes a spokesperson.

The Dutch national team has been in Sydney since last weekend, in the run-up to the Women’s World Cup. Next week, the Orange will fly on to New Zealand, where the first game against Portugal is scheduled for July 23.
