A lot with six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi at last winter’s World Cup win in Qatar fetched 7.8 million dollars (7.1 million euros) at a Sotheby’s auction on Thursday. The company announced this.

Sotheby’s had set a target amount of around 10 million dollars (9.1 million euros), but that was not achieved. The ultimately winning bid was one of 6.5 million dollars (5.9 million euros). With costs and commissions added, the amount rose to 7.8 million dollars (7.1 million euros). As usual, the buyer remains anonymous.

A jersey by basketball legend Michael Jordan, worn during the final games of his last title with the Chicago Bulls (1998), remains the most expensive jersey ever. 10.1 million dollars (9.2 million euros) was paid for his jersey in September 2022. The shirt that Diego Maradona wore in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England in Mexico is in second place. A fan bought the item in May 2022 for 9.3 million dollars (8.5 million euros).

Messi won the last missing title at the World Cup in Qatar. With seven goals, the captain of the ‘Albiceleste’ was very important for his team.
