Painful afternoon for RWDM: Antwerp counts out underage Brussels residents in the first half and thus scores the first 9 out of 9 of the season

One half, that’s all Antwerp needed to hit RWDM against the canvas. What Janssen failed to achieve in the first leg – namely scoring two penalties – Alderweireld did. The Great Old responds appropriately with this 0-4 after the lesser match in Ostend and thus records a 9 out of 9 for the first time this season.

Penalty, penalty, penalty!’ It was impossible to keep count of the number of times the RWDM fans jokingly called for a penalty. They thought the eleven meter that was the basis of the 0-1 was given rather cheaply. Ondrejka went down after a hooking error by Sambu, Alderweireld did not fail from the spot.

Cunning Janssen

So a penalty. Third time lucky for Antwerp against RWDM. In the first match, which ended 0-0, Janssen missed two against Defourny. Janssen didn’t have to wait long to get on the scoreboard himself. ‘Vin Diesel’ was allowed to start as a deep striker again, because Ilenikhena started on the bench after some difficult matches. Janssen was sent into the lane by Ejuke and Defourny allowed himself to be caught by the Dutchman’s tricky, counter-footed ball.

Janssen was able to score a second time, but face to face with Defourny he was not selfish. The ball wide was perfect, the 0-3 was unmissable for Ondrejka. It will be good for the Swede, who was in the starting line-up for the first time since August 22 due to a long injury. He was preferred over Kerk and due to the departure of Muja to Samsunspor, he has one less competitor on the flank.

Quadruple substitution

Match played, you would think. Rightly so, because RWDM was not in a position to force anything. After a quadruple substitution at half-time by Caçapa, the first goal threat came from Biron, but Butez clipped it easily.

And then it was ‘penalty, penalty, penalty’ again. Janssen was hooked and Lardot pointed to the spot, but the line judge had seen offside. Incorrect, the VAR ruled and so Alderweireld was able to convert his second penalty of the afternoon.

0-4 and the knife went a little deeper into the Molenbeek wound. Sampaio brought down Ondrejka who had broken through and had to leave early with a second yellow card. The signal for Van Bommel to make a change: Bataille, Ondrejka and Doumbia made way for Ilenikhena, Corbanie and Kerk.

Sissako removed

It became quiet in the stadium for a while when substitute Sissako remained on the ground for a long time after a duel with Ekkelenkamp. He was taken away on a stretcher and so RWDM had to complete the match with nine players. The people of Brussels are clearly in the corner where the blows are falling and they will have to do their best to fight their way out of the relegation zone.

That is by no means a concern for Antwerp, which has won three league victories in a row for the first time this season after the victories against Standard and Club Brugge. Next week KV Mechelen will visit the Bosuil and then RAFC will go to AA Gent. Another two weeks without midweek football, that will also be good for Mark van Bommel and his team.
