FA CUP. Wout Faes sees Leicester push through from the bench, Newcastle win a tough derby at Sunderland

Leicester City secured a place in the sixteenth finals of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon. The leader in the Championship, the English second division, successfully completed the move to series rival Millwall with a 2-3 score. In the north of England, Newcastle beat rival Sunderland 0-3 in the Tyne Wear derby.

The Foxes went into the dressing rooms with a double bonus thanks to goals from Cesare Casadei and Ricardo Pereira. Duncan Watmore quickly scored the tying goal in the second half, but Thomas Cannon crushed the hope of a comeback a handful of minutes later. Zian Flemming gave the host renewed hope in the final minutes, but the calf appeared to have already drowned.

Red Devil Wout Faes watched from the winning bench for 90 minutes. At Millwall, Casper De Norre (ex-OHL) was missing with a calf injury, while Dennis Praet was not part of Leicester’s core.

Newcastle outdos rival

For the first time since 2016, a derby between Newcastle and Sunderland was on the program. Both clans of supporters were present in large numbers at the Stadium of Light. Newcastle were not surprised by the second division and won thanks to two goals from Alexander Isak and an own goal from Ballard.

Brighton and Bournemouth not without difficulty

Premier League clubs Brighton and Bournemouth had to visit Stoke and Queens Park Rangers respectively to avoid an early cup elimination. Bart Verbruggen (ex-Anderlecht) had to turn around twice against Stoke, where ex-Club Brugge striker Wesley Moraes was in the starting line-up. The Brazilian could not score, but his colleague on the other side did. With the score 2-2, Joao Pedro put two more in the basket for Brighton, who eventually won 2-4.

‘The Cherries’ from Bournemouth also scored two goals at QPR. But after the break, Bournemouth straightened out thanks to Justin Kluivert, among others: 2-3.
