National coach Ives Serneels to miss Red Flames matches against Spain and Denmark due to long covid

The Red Flames will have to do without national coach Ives Serneels in their European Championship qualifiers against world champion Spain (Friday, April 5 in Leuven) and Denmark (Tuesday, April 9 in Viborg) next month. The Belgian Football Association announced this on social media on Wednesday. Serneels is struggling with long covid.

Assistant Kris Van Der Haegen and Thomas Jansen, the coach of the girls' promises, will temporarily take over his duties.

The 51-year-old Serneels has been national coach of the Red Flames since 2011. He led the Belgian women to the European Championships of 2017 (first round) and 2021 (quarter-finals).

Serneels announced a selection of 23 players for the first two European Championship qualifiers on Tuesday. In addition to Spain and Denmark, Belgium still shares its group with the Czech Republic. The matches in the European Championship qualifiers will be played between April 5 and June 16. The final round is from July 2 to 27, 2025 in Switzerland.
