Former Anderlecht talent stops playing football at the age of 27 due to back problems: “Time to take a new path”

Andy Kawaya announced on social media on Thursday that he is hanging up his football boots. The 27-year-old Brussels resident has been without a club since this summer and is struggling with back problems. “After 23 years in football, including 10 years as a professional player, it is time to retire and embark on a new path,” he posted on Instagram.

Kawaya was known for years as a great talent. The attacker received his youth training at Anderlecht, where he made his debut for the first team in September 2013. He shone in the Champions League, among other things, when he visited Arsenal (3-3), but was never able to work his way up to a permanent position at the Purple & White, partly due to injuries. After a loan to Dutch side Willem II in the spring of 2016, he finally closed the door behind him at Anderlecht in the summer of 2017.

Afterwards, few successful spells followed at KV Mechelen and the Italian Avellino. In recent years he played in the lower series in Spain with Cultural Leonesa, FC Cartagena, Albacete and again Cultural Leonesa. He left the latter club last summer.

In his post on Instagram, Kawaya explains his back problems in recent years. “From September 2021, a hernia kept me off the fields for a long time. I did everything I could to combat the pain, but surgery was the only option in May 2022. I was able to continue afterwards, but in August last year my back hurt again and I had to undergo another operation, the fifth in my career. I do not want to endanger my health in the future and have therefore decided to retire as a professional football player at the age of 27.”
