Two disallowed goals and two lost points: Club Brugge cannot get past KV Mechelen

No goals between KV Mechelen and Club Brugge: a mediocre match ended 0-0, although blue and black did see two goals disallowed and had a few beckoning opportunities. During a final offensive, Nusa hit the post, causing Club to once again lose points on the move. Despite a seventh clean sheet in a row.

For Club Brugge it was important to continue in the right direction: with eight victories in ten matches, Deila had finally got the engine going. Although movements in their own competition remain a difficult story for blue-black, because they have only won three this season. It had to happen again at Besnik Hasi’s KV Mechelen, which lost to STVV on its own field last weekend.

Deila opted for Jutgla and Thiago as striker, leaving Skov Olsen – just like last weekend – on the bench. However, they could have used the Dane well from the kick-off: Club lacked pace and ingenuity. Mechelen first threatened twice through Bassette, who made it quite difficult for Mechele and co. Yet it was Club that – it seemed – took the lead. Vanaken worked in a ball introduced by Nielsen. But according to the linesman, the ball had crossed the back line. The party did not go ahead, not even when the VAR examined the images again.

Thiago also disqualified

The neutral supporter was not really happy in the first half: we saw a festival of carelessness, mistakes and irritations. Club was put under a lot of pressure and had difficulty finding space (and opportunities), Malinwa stung when possible. Bassette tried again, and Vanlerberghe also got an opportunity. This always without many problems for Simon Mignolet.

Get better after the break, then? Not quite. KV Mechelen and Club Bugge had a stranglehold on each other and did not let go. That’s why Deila quickly decided to take action. A triple substitution followed on the hour mark: Skov Olsen, Onyedika and Meijer came. The pressure in Bruges increased, the first cracks in the Mechelen concrete appeared. Nusa also came to participate. In the meantime, Vetlesen had missed the chance of the match: he shot high from close range.

Club came closer and closer to a goal and scored again… invalid. Thiago was able to head in Nusa’s cross via the head of a Mechelen defender, but was apparently offside. A strange decision: based on the images, Thiago was onside, but we did not see a VAR line on television. Towards the end, the atmosphere on the field also became more nervous: ref Laforge – not exactly playing his best game – started waving cards. Including for Vanaken and Hasi. It did nothing for the game image and the pace.

Nusa on the post

The final offensive was for Club Brugge: KVM retreated en masse to secure a point. A counter from Nusa ended up at the feet of Skov Olsen, but he deflected the ball at an opponent. Then try it yourself, Nusa thought: a minute later the young Norwegian curled the ball onto the post. In the meantime, Club should have scored at least once. Seven minutes of extra time also did not bring any relief, causing Deila’s men to once again lose points on the road. And that despite a seventh (!) clean sheet in a row. But that only buys you one point.
