Mertens (WTA 1 double) and Zhang (WTA 4 double) form the top seed in London. In the final, the Czech second seeded Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, who defeated the Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the semifinals in twice 6-2.

Elise Mertens can try to extend her double title on Sunday. Last year she won her third Grand Slam title on the London grass alongside Taiwanese Hsieh Su-Wei. Before that, she also won two other Grand Slams in doubles: the US Open 2019 and the Australian Open 2021 with Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.

“Give everything”

“I am very excited to be here in a final again,” said the Limburger. “It’s not every day that you get the chance to play Center Court at Wimbledon. It only happens a few times in a lifetime. So we’re going to give everything.”

The 26-year-old Mertens won the doubles tournament last year together with the Taiwanese Hsieh Su-wei. Now she can renew her title. “It’s an opportunity to cherish. I remember last year we had to save two match points before we won 9-7 in the third set after a great battle of over three hours. I hope it will be a little shorter this time,” Mertens smiled.
