Vincent Kompany was finally able to win again on Saturday after three games without a win. Burnley won 0-2 on a visit to Fulham. However, the match was mainly dominated by Rebecca Welch, who became the first female ref in the Premier League. And for that she received congratulations from Kompany afterwards himself.

At the age of 40, Welch signed for a first in England. Never before has a match at the highest level been officiated by a female referee. Welch received a warm welcome from the fans when she entered the field with the match ball. And then she started her task: managing 90 minutes of football.

There was a lot of buzz around the referees in the Premier League on Saturday. There was the second yellow card that Forest player Willy Boly received after what seemed to be a correct tackle. In addition, the penalty that was not given to Liverpool after a handball from Martin Ødegaard was also talked about. But emotions did not flare up around Welch’s decisions, who handed out three yellow cards. A successful debut.

Big moment

Vincent Kompany congratulated Welch afterwards on her performance. “I wanted to congratulate her because it’s a great moment,” he said. “After the match it is fair to acknowledge that this is a milestone and that there can be more matches. The best part is always when someone is judged on his or her merit and she certainly earned her scoop. I’m happy to be part of this moment.”

Fulham coach Marco Silva was less talkative after the defeat. He characterized Welch’s debut as a “normal performance”, indicating that the debutante had at least not disadvantaged his team with crucial errors.
