Andy Murray was eliminated in the third round of the Miami Masters tournament. The Czech Tomas Machac was too strong for the former number 1 in the world after an intense match with 5-7 7-5 7-6 (5). It was the last time that the 36-year-old Murray competed in Miami, a city he also calls his “tennis home”.

“Miami has always been a special place for me throughout my career,” he said before leaving the track for the final time. “It has really been my tennis home. So much of my work, training and preparation has been done here. I love the city.”

The match seemed over when Murray injured his ankle at 5-5 in the third set, dropped his racket, covered his face and visibly stumbled to the side in pain. But after injury treatment he returned to the track.

A tiebreak then turned out to be necessary to decide the match. Murray took a 5-3 lead, but was unable to finish the game. Machac, who had previously defeated fifth seed Andrey Rublev, scored four points in a row and forced Murray to finally say goodbye to the crowd in Miami.
