Final Stretch to Euro 2021: Belgium’s Red Devils Gear Up for Friendlies with Ireland and England

Today the Red Devils gather at the training center in Tubize for the friendly international matches in Ireland (Saturday in Dublin) and England (next Tuesday in London). National coach Domenico Tedesco had no big surprises in store for his selection last Thursday. Kevin De Bruyne is not available due to a groin injury. With Genoa defender Koni De Winter, a newcomer joined the team.

The practice matches in Ireland and England are the final stretch for the Devils towards the European Championship in Germany. Tedesco himself can start the diptych with confidence and a new contract. The 38-year-old German extended his agreement with the football association until mid-2026, after the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Tedesco did give Romelu Lukaku a spot in his selection on Thursday. The all-time top scorer of the national team is having problems with his hip and is unlikely to play against Ireland. He is expected on the pitch at Wembley. Lukaku also played with Roma in Serie A against Sassuolo on Sunday. At the back, Arthur Theate is struggling with a muscle injury, but he is also in the core, just like Arthur Vermeeren, who is hardly allowed to participate at his new club Atlético Madrid.

Thomas Meunier celebrates his return after a year of absence after his transfer to Turkish side Trabzonspor. Charles De Ketelaere and Amadou Onana return from injury. Yannick Carrasco, who is now in the rag basket, Alexis Saelemaekers and Ameen Al-Dakhil were dropped.

The Belgians will train four times in Tubize in the following days, before boarding the plane to Dublin on Friday afternoon. On Monday they travel from Ireland to London for the match against England. The Devils will complete the international matches in their new jerseys. Ireland is played in dark red, England in blue, an ode to the cartoon character Tintin.
