Meleana Shim is now also accusing her former club Portland Thorns of forcing her to keep quiet about the sexual abuse of football coach Paul Riley. Over the past week, Shim and teammate Sinead Farrelly opened up about years of abuse against Riley.
Shim did this on Tuesday after the club apologized to Thorns. Riley was fired by Portland Thorns in 2015. “He’s a predator,” Shim told NBC. “He took our sexual abuse and our careers away. Paul didn’t just hold me in check, the club did too. They silenced me.”

On multiple topics, Shim continued. “Including my sexuality. It made me feel very uncomfortable.” After his discharge, Riley moved to North Carolina Courage. He was evicted there last week. The coach has denied everything so far. FIFA opened an investigation on Friday. Lisa Baird, president of the NWSL (American Women’s Soccer Confederation), has already resigned earlier.
