After a win against Azerbaijan and a defeat against European champions Serbia, the Yellow Tigers took on top country Russia on Monday afternoon.
The first set immediately set the tone for a nail-biting match. Belgium ran out to 12-6, but Russia shifted up a gear and suddenly had a 12-15 lead. Still, it was Belgium that got the first set balls at a 24-22 score, but Russia did not give in and took the set after all (29-31).
Also in the second set, it was Russia that came out on top (21-25), so the Yellow Tigers needed a spectacular comeback. That comeback was convincingly started in the third set, as Russia was set aside with convincing 25-13 figures. The fourth set also went to the Tigers (25-22), so the fifth set had to decide.
Our national volleyball women immediately took matters into their own hands and led to a 7-4 lead. Still, Russia came forward, and trailing 10-11, the Tigers still had a lot of work ahead of them. In a phenomenal way, Belgium was finally able to pull out the victory, it won the last five points of the match: 15-11.
Thanks to the win, the Tigers climb to third place in their group, the top 4 advance to the eighth finals. On Tuesday, Belgium will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This edition of the European Championship takes place in four different cities and 24 countries participate. The other three groups are in Plovdiv in Bulgaria, Zadar in Croatia and Cluj-Napoca in Romania.
