Belgium is a dark horse in the European Championship, while Germany shines against France

The German football team recently lost to God-better Turkey and Austria. Until Saturday evening at 8:59 PM, there was hardly a German who would dare to bet his leaking garden house, such as one that our in-house analyst Franky Van Der Elst has, on gold at the European Championships in his own country.

Toni Kroos is one of the believers. “More is possible than people think,” said the Real midfielder, back after a two-and-a-half-year absence, and he provided the assist for the 0-1 against France just a few seconds into his return. That is called ‘direct impact’.

In our opinion, it cannot be explained that Germany is not, and Belgium, for example, is one of the European Championship outsiders. We provide the Germans’ starting eleven purely to support that statement. In goal was Barcelona’s Ter Stegen. The defense consisted of Kimmich (Bayern), Rüdiger (Real), Tah (Leverkusen) and Mittelstädt (Stuttgart). The midfield then: Kroos (Real), Andrich (Leverkusen), Musiala (Bayern), Gündogan (Barcelona) and Wirtz (Leverkusen). In the striker role, Nagelsmann opted for Havertz from Arsenal.

Debut Undav

It is a mix of rough diamonds – Wirtz has an estimated transfer value of 100 million euros, Musiala is ten million euros more expensive – and German quality, in the persons of Kroos and Gündogan. It simply could not be that this selection would remain astray.

At least, that is how we thought about it, but in Germany, with a sense of exaggeration, the question gradually arose whether it made sense to start the European Championship. The pride had completely disappeared, as had the confidence. Also between the lines: the latest performances were dramatic.

And then came France. And changed a lot, if not everything, helped by Wirtz’s opening goal after eight seconds. France had a few dominant phases before the break, but we don’t want to put too much stock in that from a German point of view: do you know one team that can keep Kylian Mbappé and his mates chained for ninety minutes? Germany, guided by Kroos, was finally at the level we would expect from such a country. Kroos is now 34. It’s hard to tell: a brilliant squitter in its simplicity.

So the 0-1 belonged to Wirtz – how long can Leverkusen keep him out of the clutches of the even bigger ones? -, the 0-2 came in Havertz’s name after a clever collective attack. Deniz Undav also saw the crisis suddenly averted. The ex-Union striker made his debut in the slot.

It is almost inevitable that this performance will be enough to ignite the European Championship fever in Germany. No one would have seen it coming, except Kroos – he also has a better view than the rest off the field.

Mbappe will be the man after all

As for France: in any case, it remains a team that you would rather avoid on the way to the final. He cannot be blamed for the fact that Mbappé remains stuck in third gear during a friendly match, but during the tournament itself he becomes the man again.

If that doesn’t happen, which would surprise us, perhaps Germany can provide some alternative seasonings. On the condition that it can continue the line from Lyon. With this collection of talent, that should be a given.
