Man City breaks Tottenham’s curse thanks to a wonderful corner from De Bruyne and a controversial winning goal in the FA Cup

At Tottenham they challenged the goal for a foul on goalkeeper Vicario, but after a VAR check the goal stood, something the Londoners completely disagreed with. Vicario was given a yellow card for his protest and was sent walking.

Manchester City deserved the win, but it was hard-fought. Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku brought momentum into the match as substitutes and De Bruyne helped decide the match with a wonderfully kicked corner.

The 20-year-old youth product of Manchester City, Oscar Bobb, was rewarded for his winning goal in injury time against Newcastle (2-3) and was allowed to start by Pep Guardiola at the expense of Jérémy Doku. “He is good in small spaces and we need that in this match,” Guardiola said. De Bruyne, whom Guardiola is handling cautiously upon his return from a hamstring injury, also started on the bench.

Bobb almost immediately thanked the trust by scoring after 7 minutes from a rebound after a saved shot from Phil Foden, but the VAR disallowed the goal because he was offside by a whisker.

Manchester City dominated possession, but failed to threaten Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Tottenham did not create a single chance in the first 45 minutes.

After 48 minutes, Alvarez was released by Bobb, but the Argentinian let the ball bounce again before he wanted to take a swing, allowing Micky van de Ven to thwart the chance with a fantastic intervention.

Pep Guardiola was counting on Belgian dynamite to ignite the match. After 65 minutes, Doku and De Bruyne replaced Bobb and Alvarez.

In the 82nd minute, De Bruyne had a fantastic opportunity to decide the match. The Danish Tottenham midfielder Hojbjerg made the mistake for the second time in a minute, allowing Foden to set the ball ready for our free-standing compatriot, but he – against his habit – carelessly kicked wide.

Two minutes before the end, City scored with De Bruyne as the referee. The Red Devil’s inswinging corner was headed in by Ake. Tottenham saw a foul on the goalkeeper, but the goal remained intact even after a VAR check.

That late goal made Manchester City the only team to advance to the 1/8th finals of the FA Cup on Friday. Bristol-Nottingham Forest (0-0), Chelsea-Aston Villa (0-0) and Sheffield Wednesday-Coventry (1-1) ended in a draw, forcing them to play a replay.
