Elise Mertens (WTA 28) secured a place in the fourth round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells last night in California, USA. In two sets, our compatriot was too strong for Japanese former number one Naomi Osaka (WTA 287): 7-5 and 6-4.

For Mertens it is the first time in her career that she has qualified for the fourth round at Indian Wells. There, the 28-year-old from Limburg will now face Coco Gauff (WTA 3), the third seed in California and also the current US Open champion.

In doubles, Mertens can prepare for the quarter-finals alongside Su-Wei Hsieh.

The Belgian number 1 is still the only compatriot to play at Indian Wells. Greet Minnen lost her first round last week in both singles and doubles.

Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen do not qualify for the quarter-finals

Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen were unable to qualify for the quarter-finals of the doubles on Monday. The Limburgers lost a day after their stunt in the first round against the Indian Bopanna and the Australian Ebden – the top seeds in California and winners of the Australian Open in January – to the French duo Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin: 4-6 and 5-7.
