Qualifying player Greet Minnen (WTA 125) was unable to cause a stunt in the opening round of Roland Garros on Sunday afternoon.
In the game against the Czech eleventh seed Petra Kvitova (WTA 12), she got a match point in the second set, which she was unable to utilize. Kvitova then made it in the tiebreaker and turned the game in her favor: 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/5) and 6-1 after 2 hours and 16 minutes.
It was the third mutual confrontation between Minnen and Kvitova, the second on clay. Kvitova previously won on ground brick in Stuttgart in 2019. At the beginning of this year, the Czech was also the best at the Australian Open (hard court).
The 23-year-old Minnen only made his debut on the main draw of Roland Garros last year. She then lost in the first round to the Argentinian Nadia Podoroska.
Minnen is the only Belgian to take action on Sunday on the opening day of Roland Garros, the other three Belgians will follow on Monday. David Goffin (ATP 13) plays at court 14 at the end of the afternoon (not before 5 pm) against the Italian top talent Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 76).
Earlier in the day, Elise Mertens (WTA 15) will face Australian qualifying player Storm Sanders (WTA 161) in the second match on court 7. Minnens partner Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 67), who is still an attentive spectator in the stands on Sunday, will play the third match on court 5 against the Italian Martina Trevisan (WTA 97).
