The Jupiler Pro League will start again in about ten days and we will immediately open with a top poster: Union – Anderlecht. Union has meanwhile digested last season’s lost title fight, the sights are now completely focused on the new year. With a new coach, but without trendsetters like Teddy Teuma or Simon Adingra. The well-known 3-5-2 formation is retained. “You can’t throw everything overboard in such a short preparation period,” said coach Alexander Blessin.

The end of the preparation is in sight for Union. With victories against Club Liège and Nijlen and draws against AS Monaco and Feyenoord, the people of Brussels have had an excellent preparation for the time being. Although coach Alexander Blessin was not too satisfied with his team’s performance against the Dutch national champion last Saturday (0-0). “Okay, we will draw and we have to remember that, but I noticed that my players were a bit tired. We’ve already trained hard and didn’t take a rest day after our last practice match, so you saw that. But that shouldn’t really be an excuse. We need to be able to handle those heavy legs better in the future.”

“I don’t always use a specific system. I just want to be able to put my best players on the field.”

Striking: Just like his predecessors Felice Mazzu and Karel Geraerts, Blessin opts for a 3-5-2 formation at Union. A logical choice. “When you have such a short preparation period, you have to pay attention to smaller things and not immediately throw the whole system overboard. It is important that everyone feels good on the field. It is not the case that I always use a specific system, at Ostend I sometimes played in a 4-3-3 and at Genoa even in a 4-2-3-1. I just want to be able to put my best players on the field. Now we play in 3-5-2, but it is not the case that this cannot change in the future.”

With the departure of players such as Teddy Teuma (Reims), Ismaël Kandouss (Ghent) and Simon Adingra (returns to Brighton), Union loses a few tastemakers. Blessin is not worried at all. When you play for a team for that long, the hunger may disappear. Then it’s time for something new. I’m glad we have some fresh blood now (Union has already brought in six reinforcements, ed.). We need to integrate these new players as soon as possible so that they feel good on the pitch.”

7 in a row?

The focus can now gradually turn towards the competition. Union opens against Anderlecht, and Union has good memories of that. Two years ago, the Unionists played their first game since their promotion in the Lotto Park, and they won it (1-3). The beginning of a fairy tale that has already lasted two seasons, only that icing on the cake is always missing: the title. But the fact that Union won the previous six confrontations with Anderlecht is now nothing, according to coach Alexander Blessin. “We can forget everything that is in the past. It’s a new game and I hope we can put in a good performance. That it is quite quiet in Anderlecht in terms of transfers? Of course you listen to what is happening there, but I prefer to focus on my own team,” concludes the German.
