There is a good chance that the Red Devils will play at least one of their group matches at the European Championship near the Belgian border, but that does not mean that they can operate from their own training complex in Tubize. The Belgian Football Association informs us that the European football association UEFA obliges all participants to choose a base camp in host country Germany. They are therefore expected to remain there during the tournament.
That seems a bit absurd, especially given the spread of the group matches. Four of the ten stadiums are located close to the Belgian border. For example, the distance between the Cologne stadium and the Red Devils’ training complex in Tubize is barely 243 kilometers. As a result, there is a chance that the Belgians’ base camp will soon be further away from one or more of the host cities than their own training complex.
At this time, the Belgian association has not yet chosen a base camp and it sounds like there is “in principle no preference” for the location. The draw is scheduled for Saturday, December 2. The national team has an eighty percent chance of playing at least one group match in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen or Dortmund, near the Belgian border.
