David Goffin (ATP 13) experienced a total off-day on Wednesday during his match in the second round of the Masters 1,000 tournament in Rome (clay / 2,082,960 euros). The native of Liège lost after barely one hour and eight minutes of tennis in two short sets (6-2 and 6-1) to the Argentinian qualifying player Federico Delbonis (ATP 64). “This was really bad,” said Goffin afterwards.

“My strokes were not good and I could not hurt him,” explained the Belgian number one. “I also served badly. I really didn’t make any point. And Federico served well. His serve is a bit different, coming down from high. I gave him too much time in the game and he likes that. And when I tried to play faster, I made mistakes. I was very inaccurate. It was very bad. ”
Goffin had no explanation for his failure. “This is really ‘un jour sans’, an off-day”, he tried. “And the opponent was good again. I never found a point to wear during the game. I had trouble moving. We all know that the surface is often slippery here, the conditions are not easy, but I should have done better anyway. ”
“I have to try to put this behind me. Such competitions should not be allowed. I can lose sometimes, but not like this. The best thing to do now is to quickly re-enter the training track. I know not to worry. Next week I will play in Lyon and I will try to get back into the rhythm right away. I registered for the tournament after the one-week postponement of Roland Garros. “Not playing for more than two weeks before the start of a grand slam tournament seemed a bit too much to me.”
