Elise Mertens (WTA 14) went down on Tuesday in the first round of the WTA tournament in Rome against the Russian Veronika Kudermetova (WTA 28). The Limburgian later announced that he would schedule a rest period. She does not play any more matches until the start of Roland Garros on May 30.
Last week, Mertens had to give up injured during the quarterfinals in Madrid. She felt relatively quickly against Kudermetova that she was not yet sufficiently fit. That’s why she takes it easy.
“I will no longer play a tournament for Roland Garros”, she said after her loss. “I really feel that my body needs to rest. I’ve already had a few minor injuries this year and the most important thing is that I can arrive in Paris with a lot of energy. With the experience I have gained, I now know what I am capable of (on gravel, ed.) And what I can or should improve. And then you also learn a lot from a loss. ”
