Ed Sheeran will be the shirt sponsor of Ipswich Town next season. The English third division announced this on Thursday. The shirts will bear the logo “+ – =% x Tour”. “The meaning of that will become clear later,” says the 30-year-old musician. “+”, “X” and “%” are the titles of the four-time Grammy winner’s first three albums.
Sheeran grew up in Suffolk and hopes his favorite team will regain some of the grandeur of yesteryear. Ipswich won the English league title in 1962 and became vice-champion twice (1981 and 1982). The FA Cup (1978) and the UEFA Cup (1981) are also in the trophy cabinet. In 2002 Ipswich was relegated from the Premier League, in 2019 the club dropped from the Championship to the League One. In it, Ipswich is currently ninth on one match day from the end.
“The club is very important to the locals and I want to do my part in this way,” says Sheeran. “I have always enjoyed the games at Portman Road and look forward to returning soon as soon as supporters are allowed back into the stadium. Now that the club has new owners, times promise to be exciting. Hopefully we can stop muddling around now. ” Ipswich Town was recently acquired by an American consortium. (belga)
