David Goffin clears first hurdle in ATP Miami qualifying round

David Goffin (ATP 109) qualified on Monday for the second (and final) qualifying round for the Masters 1,000 tournament in Miami (hard court/$8,995,555). The 33-year-old from Liège defeated the Japanese Shintaro Mochizuki (ATP 143) in the first preliminary round in two sets (7-6 (7/4) and 6-2).

The Belgian number one will face the winner of the French match between Arthur Cazaux (ATP 74), the third seed in the qualifications, and Harold Mayot (ATP 141) in the second qualifying round.

Earlier in the day, Zizou Bergs (ATP 114) qualified for the second qualifying round. The 24-year-old Limburger defeated the Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves (ATP 134) in three sets (2-6, 6-1 and 6-4). Alexander Blockx (ATP 294) lost his first match in the preliminary rounds. The eighteen-year-old Antwerp resident, who took part in the qualifications in Miami thanks to a wild card from the organization, was eliminated twice 6-2 by the Spaniard Pedro Martinez (ATP 88), the eighth seed in the preliminary rounds.

Among the women, Greet Minnen (WTA 79), the sixth seed in the qualifications, did not reach the main draw. She lost her second qualifying round on Monday in two sets (6-3 and 6-2) to the American Claire Liu (WTA 114). Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 88), the eleventh seed, will play in her second preliminary round. She meets the American Katie Volynets (WTA 121). Elise Mertens (WTA 28) is directly on the main table and is free in the first round.
