Maaseik has started the final of the play-offs of the EuroMillions Volley League with a great victory in the hall of Roeselare. The Limburgers defeated the West-Flemish in the first game of the best-of-five, with the Belgian national title at stake, 1-3 (21-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 17-25).
Roeselare finished in first place in the Champions Final 4 and thus got the home advantage in the best-of-five. The West Flemish could not profit from that, and Maaseik took the profit away. On Wednesday, both clubs will look each other in the eye again, in Maaseik. Next Saturday, the third game will follow, in Roeselare. The possible fourth match is scheduled for April 14 in Maaseik, the possible fifth clash is finally scheduled for April 17 in Roeselare.
Roeselare and Maaseik face each other for the 21st time in the battle for the national title. Maaseik has won 12 times so far, Roeselare eight times. The Limburgers have already been crowned national champions 16 times, the West Flemish 11 times. In 2019 Maaseik took the league title. Last season, the competition was stopped prematurely due to the corona crisis, without awarding a championship title.
At the end of February, Roeselare defeated Maaseik 3-1 in the final of the Belgian Cup: 25-21, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-19.
