After defending champions Roger Federer (ATP 6) and Rafael Nadal (ATP 3), the world’s number one Novak Djokovic is also absent from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami, which starts on March 24. The 33-year-old Serb announced this on Twitter on Friday.
“Dear fans, I am very sorry to announce that I will not be traveling to Miami this year,” Djokovic tweeted. “I have decided to use this precious time to stay at home with my family. With all these restrictive measures, I have to balance my time on the tour and at home. I look forward to returning next year. ”
The Miami Open would normally be Djokovic’s first tournament since winning the Australian Open for the ninth time last month. The Serbian sustained an abdominal muscle injury in the third round, but still bit through and took his eighteenth grand slam title.
Djokovic has already won the prestigious tournament in Miami six times: in 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
